Deadline for the Trinity College Dublin Masters Scholarships

The deadline for the Trinity College Dublin Masters Scholarships is 31st July 2024.

History

Trinity College Dublin was founded by royal licence in 1592, and Dublin Corporation offered a suitable location, the former Priory of All Hallows. Its establishment occurred at a period when many universities were being built across Western Europe in the notion that they would add prestige to the state in which they were located and that their graduates, mostly clergy, would perform crucial service as civil administrators. England had two long-established universities, each with an expanding set of colleges, by the 1590s, while Scotland had four. The concept of an Irish university institution arose at a time when the English state was consolidating its grip over the realm and Dublin was becoming a functioning capital city.

The principal advocates of the idea, a group of individuals, lay and clerical, believed that establishing a university was a crucial step in bringing Ireland into the mainstream of European scholarship and in strengthening the Protestant Reformation within the country.
