Harry S Truman Scholarships for Bright Scholars

The Harry S Truman Scholarship is a very competitive national scholarship. Every year, the Foundation examines over 600 applicants for 55 to 65 Scholarships. These 600 applications do not include students who compete on their own campus for one of four nominations from their institution.

The Truman Scholarship offers up to $30,000 in scholarships to individuals pursuing graduate degrees in subjects related to public service. Students must be juniors in college at the time of selection. Additionally, the Foundation assists with career advice, internship placement, graduate school admissions, and professional development.

Application Process for the Harry S. Truman Scholarship

Students who want to be considered for nomination should complete the Princeton Truman Preliminary Application by the school deadline. The application will be available following the fall information session. Up to a dozen, applications will be chosen for a campus interview, and from that group, up to four Princeton applicants will be named nominees and advance to the national competition. Dr Gump will meet with each nominee individually in December and January to help them prepare for final submission by the national deadline.

Selection Criteria

  • the extent and quality of community service and government participation;
  • leadership track record
  • academic performance, writing ability, and analytical abilities; and
  • the suggested program of study’s fitness for a career in public service

The Foundation defines public service as employment in any level of government, uniformed services, public-interest organizations, nongovernmental research and/or educational organizations, public and private schools, and public service-oriented nonprofit organizations, such as those whose primary goals are to assist needy or disadvantaged individuals or to protect the environment.

Truman Scholars receive up to $30,000 for graduate or professional education, participate in leadership development activities, and have special possibilities for internships and federal government employment.
