Chancellor’s Merit Award at IU South Bend

The Chancellor’s Merit Award is intended to encourage out-of-state attendance at Indiana University South Bend. It is open to degree-seeking undergraduate students who are not legal residents of Indiana or who are eligible non-citizens. The scholarship allows students to earn a tuition reduction for attending school out of state. Students enrolled in completely online programs are not eligible for the Chancellor’s Merit. A limited number of awards will be given out each year to students who meet the criteria.

Criteria for Chancellor’s Merit Award

Incoming Students

  • Graduation from a high school in the United States or a state-recognized home school program with a college-ready curriculum,
  • Have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Be admitted formally and unconditionally (students will not be reviewed until they have been granted full admission status).

Transfer Students

Out-of-state fee-paying transfer students must meet the following requirements to be eligible for this award:

  • The Indiana House passed HB 1402 and SB 590, which make it illegal for students who are neither US citizens nor eligible aliens to receive institutional scholarship funding. Students who do not meet these requirements will be ineligible for the award.
  • Transfer from a college in the United States with at least 26 transferable credit hours, and
  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 in previous collegiate coursework.

Transfer students who have less than 26 transferable credit hours must complete the high school record criteria specified above. Students obtaining their first bachelor’s degree will be given preference.

Renewal

If students achieve the following criteria, the Chancellor’s Merit Award is automatically renewed:

  • Maintain a cumulative average of 3.0,
  • Maintain at least a half-time enrollment in the autumn and spring semesters, and
  • During the academic year, you must complete at least 18 credit hours (an academic year consists of Fall, Spring and the following Summer Sessions).

Application Process for the Chancellor’s Merit Award

There is no application process for the scholarship other than to apply for admission at Indiana University South Bend. If you meet the criteria, you will be automatically considered for the scholarship.

Scholarship Reward

The Chancellor’s Merit Award recipients will pay 150% of the in-state resident tuition rate. Students who are legal residents of qualified MSEP or MSEA states (as defined above) will be eligible for the MSEP or MSEA award. Continuous attendance in the fall and spring semesters, a minimum of half-time enrollment (6 credit hours) during the fall and spring semesters, and successful completion of at least 18 credit hours during the award year are all required for awards (Fall, Spring, and Summer). Students enrolled in completely online programs are ineligible for the Chancellor’s Merit Award.

The history of IU South Bend is a blend of tradition and innovation. Indiana University began teaching students at South Bend’s Central High School in 1916. IU South Bend relocated to its current site on 80 acres along the St. Joseph River in the River Park area in 1961. IU South Bend awarded its first degrees in 1967.
