Northern Arizona University NAU Scholarships are scholarships designed by Northern Arizona University to aid international students gain admission and further their education without stress.

International Excellence Award

The International Excellence Award is an NAU Scholarship was created to help high-achieving underrepresented international students attend NAU. It is a merit-based tuition waiver for international students admitted directly into a university degree program on the Flagstaff campus for the first time. The award amount is variable.

Criteria for International Excellence Award

  • F-1 Degree Seeking Student for the First Time (Undergraduate and Graduate)
  • Out-of-state tuition must be paid in full with personal or family finances.
  • At the time of consideration, you must have a minimum GPA of 3.0.
  • The award is based on the information submitted during the entrance application process and is subject to change after analyzing applicants’ final official transcripts.

This is a tuition award/waiver only and will not be converted into a cash award. Awards are extremely competitive, and eligibility does not ensure selection. Other aspects may be taken into account.

Students that are not eligible to apply include:

  • Government or other organization-sponsored students
  • Students pursuing dual degrees or receiving additional tuition breaks
  • Students in the Intensive English Program, including those in the Bridge Program

Please keep in mind that award amounts will be reduced for students who also receive the Arizona-Sonora Scholarship.

Renewal Criteria

  • Every year/semester, renewable
  • The minimum GPA varies.
  • All necessary service and attendance requirements must be met.

How to Apply for the Scholarship

  • Once a comprehensive international student admission application is submitted, students who meet the criteria are immediately considered.
  • There is no need for an additional application.
  • On a first-come, first-served basis.

Awards

This award is only available as an out-of-state tuition waiver. Out-of-state tuition is waived up to the amount of the award, but not in excess of out-of-state tuition rates for the semester. It cannot be applied to mandatory or special class costs, as well as other fees such as housing, meal plans, and so on.

Global Achievement Award

The Global Achievement Award is a one-time, merit-based NAU Scholarship award that is applied to out-of-state tuition only during the autumn and spring semesters. The grant amount fluctuates, but the maximum award amount for the academic year is $10,000.

Criteria for the Global Achievement Award

  • F-1/J-1 Student Pursuing a Degree (Undergraduate and Graduate)
  • By the end of the previous semester, you must have completed 12 units of coursework.
  • Out-of-state tuition must be paid in full with family finances.
  • A minimum 2.75 GPA at the end of the preceding semester is required. Please contact ISSS if you are unsure if you will meet the minimal GPA for application.

Renewal Criteria

  • A cumulative GPA of 2.75 or above is required.
  • One-time grant; applicants must reapply each year.
  • All necessary service and attendance requirements must be met.
  • You may get less than your full award amount if you enroll in less than a complete course of study and must be approved for a reduced course load by ISSS.

How to Apply for the Scholarship

  • Send the following three items to ISSS with your completed application:
    • Application Form: When the application is open, students will receive an email notification and may contact ISSS ([email protected]) for the application form. Academic accomplishment and academic involvement, social or community involvement, the quality of the personal essay, and the strength of your letter of recommendation will all be considered while reviewing applications.
    • Personal Essay: A one-page essay detailing your future goals and how this grant will help you achieve them is required for this application. You should utilize this article to demonstrate what distinguishes you and your experience. This essay should be typed and titled how you see fit. Include any other information regarding your experience that you would like the scholarship committee to know.
    • Recommendation letter: Request a recommendation letter. You should obtain this letter from someone who is familiar with you and can speak to the ways in which you have participated and contributed to the NAU community, whether via academic performance, cultural awareness, or other activities.
  • Application deadline: Students will be notified via email when applications are open and the deadline approaches. Only applications that are completely filled out will be evaluated.
