About the Sponsor

Duke University is a private research university in Durham, North Carolina. Founded in 1838 by Methodists and Quakers in the present-day town of Trinity, the school relocated to Durham in 1892. The Duke Endowment was founded in 1924 by tobacco and electric power industrialist James Buchanan Duke, and the name was altered to honour his late father, Washington Duke.

The campus encompasses around 8,600 acres (3,500 hectares) and is divided into three contiguous sub-campuses in Durham, as well as a marine lab in Beaufort. The West Campus, designed primarily by African American architect Julian Abele, who graduated first in his class at the University of Pennsylvania School of Design, incorporates Gothic architecture with the 210-foot (64-meter) Duke Chapel at the campus centre and the highest point of elevation, which is adjacent to the Medical Center. East Campus, 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometres) away and home to all first-year students, is designed in the Georgian style. In Asia, the university oversees two concurrent schools: Duke-NUS Medical School in Singapore (founded in 2005) and Duke Kunshan University in Kunshan, China (established in 2013).

Major sources rank Duke as one of the top colleges in the United States and the world. With an overall acceptance rate of 5.7%, undergraduate admissions are among the most stringent in the country. Duke is one of the top 10 research colleges in the United States, spending more than $1 billion on research each year. More than a dozen faculty members are frequently named to annual lists of the world’s most-cited researchers.
