Schwarzman Scholarship is the first scholarship created to respond to the twenty-first century’s geopolitical landscape and prepare the next generation of global leaders. Through a one-year Master’s Degree at Tsinghua University in Beijing, one of China’s most prestigious universities, the programme will provide the world’s best and brightest students with the opportunity to develop their leadership skills and professional networks.

Level/Field of Study

This scholarship program is strictly for post graduate studies. It is specifically for Master’s Degree and Leadership Program in Global Affairs with concentrations in one of the following areas: Public Policy, Economics and Business, and International Studies.

Criteria for Schwarzman Scholarship

Strong intellect and character quality are required to demonstrate exceptional leadership abilities, and the capacity to anticipate and respond to shifts and trends within context is needed. Also, candidates must satisfy the following requirements.

It is required to be a student at the undergraduate level.

Candidates who are currently taking part in undergraduate degree programs must be able to successfully finish all requirements for their degree by August 1st in their Schwarzman Scholars year of enrollment. There is no requirement for a specific area of undergraduate studies. All fields are accepted, and it is crucial that applicants, regardless of the major they are studying at the undergraduate level, explain how taking part in Schwarzman Scholarship will enhance their leadership skills in their field.

You must be between 18 and 28 years of age.

Candidates must be 18. They must also not have reached the age of 29 by July 1st of the Schwarzman scholar enrollment cycle (for the current process of selection beginning August 1st 2023).

You must be fluent in the English language.

Candidates must show the ability to demonstrate English abilities since lectures will be taught in English. If the applicant’s first country of residence is not English, then official English proficiency tests must be included when applying. This requirement is exempt in the case of applicants who went to an undergraduate college where the primary teaching language is English for two years or more of the applicant’s educational program. This requirement is also exempted for those who have completed their studies at least English for two to three years of the master’s level or more. Acceptable tests include an online test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL iBT). The minimum score is 100. International English Language Testing System (IELTS). A minimum score of 7. Cambridge English: Advanced (C1) or Cambridge English: Proficiency (C2). A minimum score of 185.

2 Essays

The two essays required comprise the Leadership Essay (750 words) and a statement of Purpose (500 words). These essays are an essential part of the application process. They are designed to assist the committee in discerning your personality and gauge your potential for leadership and your writing abilities and analytical capabilities.

Transcript/Academic Records

You must download and scan official transcripts from each postsecondary educational institution with a degree you attended.

3 Letters of Recommendation

Your references should be able to comment on your intellect, personal qualities, and leadership capabilities using specific examples based on their encounters with you.

Video Introduction

Make a video self-introduction that is not more than one minute. Introduce yourself in any manner or environment you think best reflects your personality and interests. The purpose of this audio recording is to let the panel listen to you speak with your own style and voice.

Deadline for the Schwarzman Scholarship

You must complete an online application form and submit the necessary documents by the deadline. Applicants from the United States and other countries must apply by September 20, 2024.

Selection Process

Interested candidates undergo a rigorous and thorough selection process to identify the world’s most promising young leaders. Those chosen will have demonstrated an ability to understand and contribute to the programme for it to evolve to meet the needs of a rapidly changing world.

Online Submission

Once you have answered all required questions, you must complete the application online and submit it. Fill out the application form in English. You are not required to complete the online application in one sitting; you may access, save, and continue working on your application as often as necessary before submitting it.

The supporting documents listed above are required to apply. 

We strongly discourage applicants from submitting non-required supplemental materials such as portfolios, writing samples, additional recommendations, etc. 

The Review Committee will not be given access to such materials.

Application Review and Interview

A distinguished committee of business, government, and academic leaders worldwide reviews applications. In late October and early November, a select number of candidates are invited to interview before an international panel of leaders from various backgrounds. These interviewers use their leadership experience to identify a group of highly accomplished candidates whose paths to leadership will be aided by a better understanding of China and its global role.

Scholarship Reward

Up to 200 students will be admitted, with approximately 45% of the first class coming from the United States, 20% from China, and 35% from the rest of the world.

The exceptional students chosen as Schwarzman Scholars will receive a comprehensive scholarship that includes tuition and fees, room and board, travel to and from Beijing at the start and end of the academic year, an in-country study tour, required course books and supplies, health insurance, and a personal stipend.

Schwarzman Scholars was founded by American financier Stephen A. Schwarzman to address the challenges of the twenty-first century and beyond. It was inspired by the Rhodes Scholarship, founded in 1902 to promote international understanding and peace.
